Merrick County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The county seat is Central City , so named after its central location.

The county is located in east central Nebraska and has an area of ​​1,281 square kilometers, of which 26 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Platte County , Polk County , Hamilton County , Hall County , Howard County, and Nance Counties .

history

Merrick County was formed in 1858. It was named after the wife of the politician Henry W. DePuy, whose maiden name was Elvira Merrick . In its original form, Merrick County was bounded by straight lines to the west, north, and east, and the Platte River to the south . In the year before Merrick County was formed, 1857, the Pawnee Indian Reservation was established. In 1873 the Merrick County located on the county part of the reservation area was taken away. This made the county about 470 square kilometers smaller and got its current bizarre shape with a narrow strip in the northwest and a corner area in the northeast. In 1897, Nance County was formed from the Pawnee reservation .

Seven structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 11, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Merrick County's population was 8,204. 135 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 3,209 households and 2,307 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.32 percent white, 0.22 percent African American, 0.10 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.67 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.48 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.05 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
