Douglas County is a county in the US state of Nebraska . The administrative seat ( county seat ) is Omaha , which was named after the Indian tribe Omaha .

The county is located in the far east of Nebraska, borders the state of Iowa and has an area of 880 square kilometers, of which 22 square kilometers are water. In Nebraska, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Sarpy County , Saunders County , Dodge County, and Washington Counties . The following counties border Douglas County:

history

Douglas County was formed in 1854. It was named after the US Senator Stephen A. Douglas .

Three locations have National Historic Landmark status , Father Flanagan's Boys' Home , the USS Hazard minesweeper, and Omaha Union Station . 164 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 10, 2018).

Douglas County had a population of 463,585 people as of the 2000 census . Of these, 11,707 residents were housed in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 182,194 households and 115,146 families. The population density was 541 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 80.96 percent white, 11.50 percent African American, 0.61 percent Native American, 1.71 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 3.40 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.76 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.67 percent of the population.

Of the 182,194 households, 32.0 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 47.5 percent were married couples living together, 12.1 percent were single mothers, 36.8 percent were non-families, 29.8 percent were single households and 8.7 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.12.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.6 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 10.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 21.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 11.0 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 95.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.9 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 43,209 , and the median income for a family is $ 54,651. Males had a median income of $ 36,577 versus $ 27,265 for females. The per capita income was $ 22,879. 6.7 percent of families and 9.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line. These included 13.0 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 7.2 percent of senior citizens aged 65 and over.
