The Brown County is a county in the US state of Nebraska . The county seat is Ainsworth , named after Captain James E. Ainsworth who oversaw the construction of the railway line. In the area of the county is part of the Niobrara Valley Preserve .

The county is located almost in the far north of Nebraska, is about 30 km north of South Dakota and has an area of 3,173 square kilometers, of which 10 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Brown County was formed in 1883 on former Indian land. It was probably named after two statesmen named Brown .
One building in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 9, 2018), the Miller Hotel .

According to the 2000 census , Brown County had 3,525 people in 1,530 households and 996 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.64 percent white, 0.03 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.26 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.23 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.62 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.82 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups.
Of the 1,530 households, 26.6 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 57.0 percent were married couples living together, 5.9 percent were single mothers, 34.9 percent were non-families, 31.6 percent were single households and 16.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.86 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.8 percent of residents under the age of 18, 5.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 22.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 96.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.3 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 28,356 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,029. Males had a median income of $ 23,986 versus $ 17,135 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,924. 8.5 percent of families and 11.1 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 14.7 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 6.8 percent were people over 65 years of age.
