Perkins County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The county seat is Grant , named after President Ulysses S. Grant .

The county is located in southwest Nebraska, borders Colorado to the east and has an area of ​​2,290 square kilometers, of which 3 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Lincoln County , Hayes County , Chase County, and Keith Counties .

history

Perkins County was formed in 1887. It was named after Charles E. Perkins , a railroad president.

The county's area was crossed by herds of cattle in the 19th century from south ( Kansas ) to north (Dakota); Former black slaves often worked as cowboys. With the advancement of the settlers from the east, the routes had to be gradually relocated towards the west of the county and later abandoned entirely. The section through Perkins County was the toughest for the herds due to the drought in the country.

Three buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 12, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Perkins County had 3,200 people in 1,275 households and 893 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.69 percent white, 0.03 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.22 percent Asian and 1.34 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.44 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.31 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,275 households, 32.5 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 62.9 percent were married couples living together, 4.6 percent were single mothers, 29.9 percent were non-families, 27.5 percent were single households and 15.7 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.01.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.6 percent of residents under the age of 18, 6.0 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 19.3 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 100.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 95.8 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 34,205 , and the median income for a family is $ 42,112. Males had a median income of $ 28,438 versus $ 19,881 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,830. 9.5 percent of families and 13.6 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 20.1 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 8.9 percent were people over 65 years of age.
