Phelps County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The county seat is Holdrege , which was named after the railroad official George W. Holdrege .

The county is located in southern Nebraska, about 25 miles from Kansas , and covers an area of 1,400 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Kearney County , Harlan County , Furnas County , Gosper County , Dawson County, and Buffalo County .
history
Phelps County was formed in 1873. It was named after William Phelps , an early settler in the area.

According to the 2000 census , Phelps County had 9,747 people. Of these, 259 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 3,844 households and 2,683 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.79 percent white, 0.11 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.28 percent Asian and 0.79 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.75 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.26 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,844 households, 33.1 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 61.6 percent were married couples living together, 5.8 percent were single mothers, 30.2 percent were non-families, 26.7 percent were single households and 13.0 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.00 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.5 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 6.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 18.1 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.9 men.
The median income for a household in the 37,319 USD , and the median income for a family was 44,943 USD. Males had a median income of $ 28,962 versus $ 21,741 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,044. 6.2 percent of families and 8.9 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 12.1 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 7.7 percent were people over 65 years of age.
