Dundy County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The county seat is Benkelman , named after JG Benkelman , an early settler in the area.

The county is located in the lower southwest corner of Nebraska, borders Colorado to the west, Kansas to the south, and covers an area of 2,385 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water. The following counties border Dundy County:

history

Dundy County was formed in 1873. It was named after the judge Elmer S. Dundy .

As of the 2000 census , Dundy County's population was 2,292. Of these, 87 residents were housed in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 961 households and 637 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.0 percent white, 0.8 percent Native American, 0.5 percent Asian and 1.0 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.8 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.2 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 961 households, 27.8 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 59.9 percent were married couples living together, 3.9 percent were single mothers, 33.7 percent were non-families, 30.9 percent were single households and 17.6 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.87 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.3 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 5.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 22.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 96.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 93.4 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 27,010 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,862. Males had a median income of $ 22,415 versus $ 18,583 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,786. 11.0 percent of families and 13.6 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 16.1 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 15.0 percent were people over 65 years of age.
