Platte County is a county in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The administrative seat ( county seat ) is Columbus , which was named after the city of the same name Columbus in Ohio .

The county is located in east central Nebraska and has an area of 1785 square kilometers, of which 29 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Colfax County , Butler County , Polk County , Merrick County , Nance County , Boone County , Madison County, and Stanton Counties .

Platte County was formed in 1856. It was named after the Platte River .

As of the 2000 census , Platte County had 31,662 people in 12,076 households and 8,465 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.29 percent white, 0.35 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.40 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 3.49 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.15 percent were descended from two or more races. 6.54 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 12,076 households, 36.1 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 59.2 percent were married couples living together, 7.6 percent were single mothers, 29.9 percent were non-families, 25.9 percent were single households, and 11.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.14.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 29.0 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 21.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 95.6 men.
The median income for a household in the 39,359 US dollars , and the median income for a family was 47,776 USD. Males had a median income of $ 30,672 versus $ 21,842 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,064. 5.4 percent of families and 7.7 percent of the population are below the poverty line. 9.0 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 6.8 percent were people over 65 years of age.
