Columbus is a city in Platte County in the US state of Nebraska , about 150 km north of Omaha , not far from the confluence of the Loup River in the Platte River .

In 1900 there were 3,522 people in the city, in 1910 there were 5,014 and in 1940 Columbus had 7632 inhabitants. At the 2010 census , the city had 22,218 inhabitants. Columbus is the county seat of Platte County.

The geographical coordinates of Columbus are 41 ° 26 ′  N , 97 ° 22 ′  W (41.432785, −97.358530). According to the United States Census Bureau , the place has an area of ​​23.8  km² , of which 23.3 km² is land and 0.5 km² (= 2.07%) is water.

The city is on several major roads, including the former Great Platte River Road and what is now Interstate 80 . The city is 100 km from Grand Island , 75 km from Norfolk and Fremont, and 120 km from Lincoln . The city is served by Columbus Municipal Airport , which has two paved runways .

history

In the spring of 1856 the "Columbus Town Company" was set up in Columbus, Ohio , the aim of which was to found a town in the valley of the Platte River in Nebraska, as a railway line was expected to be built here. The founders of this community were primarily of German and Swiss origin. Specifically, the later Columbus was planned in the area of ​​the confluence of the Platte and Loup Rivers . After the first settlers settled in the area in May 1856, others followed suit. A grain mill, a sawmill and a brewery were built.

George Francis Train owned 7,000  acres (around 2,800  hectares ) of land in the city. His company, Credit Foncier of America , once built a hotel here, Credit Foncier , which was relocated from Cleveland in 1868 . Since Train, who helped build the Union Pacific Railroad , owned a lot of land in the city, he predicted a great future for it. He wrote newspaper articles and made speeches on the east coast promoting the city that "Columbus [is] the new center of the Union and, quite possibly, the future capital of the United States."

By 1910 Columbus already had a population of about 5,000 and was an important trading center for goods destined for the western United States. In the 1930s, water began to be channeled from the Loup River in order to generate energy from hydropower plants .

Andrew Jackson Higgins

Columbus is the birthplace of Andrew Jackson Higgins , who developed the Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel (LCVP) known as the Higgins boat , which was primarily used during World War II . There is a replica of one of these landing craft in Pawnee Park. Bronze soldiers jump on sand collected from 58 beaches from D-Day , the Korean War, and the Vietnam War .

Columbus calls itself the City of Power and Progress . The city's economy is based on agriculture and manufacturing, with industrial enterprises being primarily drawn to cheap, plentiful hydropower. Major employers include Archer Daniels Midland , who operate a corn mill here, Appleton Electric, Central Confinement Service, Vishay (formerly Dale Electronics), Becton Dickinson, and Behlen Manufacturing. The Nebraska Public Power District is based in Columbus.

Demographics

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Columbus inhabited 20,971 people. The population density was 902.7 people per km ². There were 8818 housing units at an average of 379.6 per km ². The Columbus population was 87.19% White , 1.45% Black or African American , 0.35% Native American , 0.48% Asian , 0.04% Pacific Islander , 3.49% said other races belong to and 1.00% named two or more races. 12.65% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.

The residents of Columbus distributed to 8,302 households out of which 34.7% were living in children under 18 years of age. 54.7% of households were married, 8.9% had a female head of the household without a husband and 33.0% were not families. 28.5% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 12.3% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.09.

The population was divided into 28.2% minors, 8.4% 18–24 year olds, 28.0% 25–44 year olds, 20.8% 45–64 year olds and 14.6% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 women there were 94.1 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 90.3 men.

The median household income in Columbus was 38,874 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 48,669 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 30,980 compared to $ 22,063 for women. The per capita income was $ 18,345. 6.9% of the population and 4.5% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 7.2% of minors and 6.5% of the age group 65 and over.

schools

There are three high schools in Columbus, of which Columbus High School is the largest with more than 1,100 students. Lakeview High School is mostly attended by students from the more rural part of the city. It is located on Lake Babcock. Scotus Central Catholic Junior-Senior High School is named after John Duns Scotus .

There is also a college, the Central Community College, a few miles outside.

There are several radio stations in Columbus, including the religious station KTLX on FM 91.3 MHz; KKOT on UKW 93.5 MHz with classic hits and the country station KZEN on UKW 100.3. KLIR on FM 101.1 mainly broadcasts Adult Contemporary . The medium wave transmitters KJSK on 900 kHz and KTTT on 1510 kHz broadcast news and talk shows.

The newspaper that appears in the city is called Columbus Telegram .
