Channel history

As the most popular of various characters who appeared in short video clips on a 2006 community channel run by Cruikshank and his cousins, Fred received other video appearances. On April 30, 2008, the Fred clips were broadcast on the FRED channel, which Cruishank claims to have been given by the original owner, and video production continued there.

As the most subscribed YouTube channel, FRED was the first to reach one million subscribers in April 2009. Four months later, it was overtaken by Nigahiga and hit two million subscribers in September 2010, shortly after moving up to 3rd place.

The regular Fred videos ended with the 4th season in spring 2011, followed by the 6-part series Friggle Chat , a comedy interview format. November 2011 started the animated video series It's Fred! . From December 2012 to May 2014 no further videos were uploaded until a staged channel takeover by FRED from the fictional South Korean company Yuksung Coorperation . On August 28, 2014, Cruikshank decided to open the channel to other video producers and to stop releasing any more Fred videos.

format

The original videos are short two- to four-minute clips, similar to popular video blogs , about the fictional six-year-old boy Fred Figglehorn who has ADHD . He can only be seen alone and talks about events in his life. Other characters like his mother can only be heard. Fred speaks squeaky and hastily, which is due to the increased speed of the recording.

Six year old Fred is mistreated by his alcoholic mother, little is known about his father. Despite being banned from filming, he secretly uploads the videos to YouTube. Fred is often bullied in kindergarten and apart from his girlfriend Bertha nobody likes him. He is in love with Judy, who does not reciprocate his feelings.

audience

The largest audience is between 13 and 17 years old. The group of 35 to 44 year olds is more strongly represented than the group of 18 to 24 year olds. Furthermore, at 67%, the audience is predominantly female.

success

His most successful video is “Fred Goes Grocery Shopping feat. Annoying Orange ”, which has been viewed over 79 million times since it was discontinued in July 2010.

For Walden Media he promoted the film City of Ember in its clips with an unofficial trailer.

Fred was seen in an episode of the youth comedy series iCarly . On US television, he appeared in December 2009 in the series Hannah Montana (episode Come Fail Away ; season 3, episode 27) in a supporting role. Three Nickelodeon television films have been made with Fred in the lead role; Fred: The Movie (September 2010), Fred 2: Night of the Living Fred (October 2011) and Fred 3: Camp Fred (July 2012). Cruikshank is the creator and lead actor of the sitcom Fred: The Show, which launched on Nickelodeon in early 2012 . He has released two albums ( It's Hackin 'Christmas and Who's Ready To Party ).
