history

In 1902 George A. Archer and John W. Daniels founded a company that dealt with the pressing of linseed oil . In 1923, the Archer-Daniels Linseed Company took over the Midland Linseed Products Company and was renamed the Archer Daniels Midland Company. In every decade since its inception, ADM has added at least one other line of business to its agro-industrial range: milling, processing, specialty feed, specialty food ingredients, cocoa, nutrition and more.

In 1993, ADM hit the headlines when it became known that there had been illegal price fixing in the distribution of lysine . In the ensuing trials, several ADM members were found guilty and fined $ 100 million.

In September 1999 Marty Andreas announced that due to pressure from the European agricultural industry, ADM would separate the area of genetically modified products from non-genetically modified products in order to give its customers freedom of choice. Until then, the company had not given the sources of the products.

In 2001 Paul B. Mulhollem became President of ADM. It went down in history because, under his leadership, ADM became the first US company to sign a contract with Cuba since a trade embargo was passed forty years earlier.

In May 2006, Patricia Woertz became CEO of ADM. In February 2007 Woertz was also elected chairman of the supervisory board. Long known as a food company, ADM has recently been shifting its resources to fuel production. According Foodprocessing.com, a journal of the food trade, ADM has its capital spending in 2007 almost doubled, to an estimated 1.12 billion US dollars . All of the increase goes into the bioenergy arena, with a particular focus on ethanol and biodiesel .

On June 6, 2014 ADM announced the complete takeover (acquisition of the remaining 20% shares) of the agricultural trader Toepfer International for 83 million US dollars.

On July 7, 2014, ADM announced the takeover of the food ingredients manufacturer WILD Flavors GmbH by the end of the year at a price of 2.3 billion euros.

criticism

The chocolate industry, including ADM, signed the so-called Harkin-Engel Protocol in September 2001 . This protocol contains measures that should lead to an end to the worst forms of child labor and slavery in the cocoa industry by 2005. A report by ARD came to the conclusion in 2010 that big companies like Mars Inc. , but also ADM or Nestlé still “at least tolerate child slavery.” An evaluation by Tulane University in 2011 found that of the six in the Harkin-Engel -Not a single one of the measures mentioned in the protocol has been fully implemented.
