Toxic 100 Index

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Toxic 100 Air Pollutors Index and Toxic 100 Water Pollutors Index are rankings of the 100 largest water and air polluters in the United States . Many of them are international industrial companies. Publisher is founded in 1998, Political Economy Research Institute (PERI, German: Institute for Political Economy Research), a legally independent establishment of the University of Massachusetts Amherst with close links to business school, as part of the Corporate Toxics Information Project (German about: Project for information on the pollutant emissions of companies). The PERI invokes the Freedom of Information Act and the right to clean air and pure water (see, inter alia, Toxic Substances Control Act ). In addition, the largest emitters of climate-damaging substances are named in the Greenhouse 100 Pollutors Index every year .

The ranking of the largest air polluters was first created in 2002 and has been updated six times since then. The current version was published in 2018 and is based on three criteria:

  • Poison score : The basis is the mass of pollutants emitted into the air directly on site and the amount of waste incinerated by the company in question indirectly via the other locations (incineration transfers) according to the official Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) of the US Environmental Protection Agency for the year 2005, in which the intensity of spreading into the environment and the degree of toxicity of the chemicals as well as the number of people affected are also included. This weighting of the raw data is based on the EPO's official risk screening for environmental indicators .
  • Mass of directly and indirectly emitted air toxins , without weighting the toxicity and the number of people affected
  • Meaning (Coverage): The ranking is limited to the presentation of the poison points for the companies operating in lists of the magazines Fortune , Forbes Magazine , and / or Standard & Poor's of the largest companies of the year are included in 2007 list. Separate operating sites are assigned to the parent company (based on the latest available information on the ownership structure).
