Fortune is a fortnightly US magazine.

history

It was published in 1930 by Time founder Henry Luce . Within four months of the onset of the Great Depression , the first editions were selling for a dollar while a copy of the New York Times cost 5 cents. Nevertheless, the first issue with 184 pages had 30,000 subscribers.

In contrast to the competition, which printed statistical data and facts in black and white, Luce tried to present the Great Depression from the perspective of social conscience. Fortune gave a new insight into agricultural and industrial economics. The magazine was also known for its photographs, for example it presented the works of Margaret Bourke-White . In addition, the advertisements and the envelope were in color.

Today Fortune is considered the second oldest business magazine in the United States after Forbes Magazine . The magazine is part of the Time Inc. media group , a Time Warner company . It appears fortnightly with a circulation of around 850,000 magazines.

Fortune is best known for a series of rankings that the paper publishes annually: Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 list the American companies with the highest sales, Fortune Global 500 the companies with the highest sales worldwide.

A major competitor is Forbes Magazine , which puts up similar rankings on topics from business life.
