Steel Dynamics (SDI) is an American steel manufacturer based in Fort Wayne , Indiana . The steel is produced exclusively in electric steelworks .
SDI is a major rail manufacturer in North America. In 2014 the company manufactured 45,000 t of “head-hardened” rails with a length of 320 ft (almost 100 m). The 320 ft rails can be welded together up to 1600 ft (490 m).
history
Steel Dynamics was founded in 1993 by former Nucor managers Keith Busse, Mark Millet and Richard Teets, who raised US $ 370 million for it. Hence, a period 1994 to 1996 CSP - minimill in Butler (Indiana) built. A low-cost power supply contract with 2.8 US cents per kWh was negotiated with American Electric Power . In 2002 another electric steel mill was built in Columbia City .
In 2007 SDI took over scrap dealer OmniSource . The Severstal plant in Columbus (Mississippi) followed in 2014 .
