history

This building stood at the beginning of the Gerdau Group: the headquarters of Sociedad Inmobiliaria João Gerdau & Cia. in Colônia de Santo Ângelo, city of Cachoeira do Sul , 1885.

Johann Heinrich Kaspar Gerdau , born in Altona , emigrated to Brazil in 1869 . There he founded the colonial goods trading company João Gerdau & Cia in the 1870s . In the 1880s he was mainly active in the wholesale of agricultural products (such as barley, wheat, rice, rye, beans, corn). In 1895, when he had meanwhile taken the first name "João", he moved from Cachoeira do Sul to Porto Alegre and founded the wholesaling company Gerdau & Naschold there with a partner, which traded wholesalers in dried and fresh goods and brewery supplies such as machines, Imported equipment, malt, hops, corks and bottles. In addition, the company imported wine directly from Jerusalem in Palestine. On January 16, 1901, Gerdau and his eldest son Hugo acquired the run-down nail factory Pontas de Paris in Porto Alegre , which they renamed João Gerdau & Filho. This company was founded by 95 shareholders. In 1908 Gerdau acquired the small furniture manufacturer Fábrica de Móveis Navegantes, which had existed in Porto Alegre since 1893, and began producing bentwood furniture in the Viennese style of Michael Thonet . Gerdau handed over the management of this company to his second son Walter.

With the death of João Gerdau on November 24, 1917, the management of the company passed to his son Hugo Gerdau. With his death, the management of the company fell to Curt Johannpeter, the husband of Hugo Gerdau's daughter Helda. From then on the company developed very dynamically into one of the largest of its kind in Latin America today.

The shortage of raw materials after the Second World War meant that Johann Heinrich Kaspar Gerdau's descendants, originally to secure the nail production, started the actual steel production.

Corporate development

As early as 1980, the Gerdau Group took the first step across borders with the takeover of the Uruguayan steel company Laisa . The first takeover in North America followed in 1989 with the purchase of the Canadian Courtice Steel. Chile and Argentina followed suit, with Colombia coming last . Gerdau made the biggest leap in 1999 with the acquisition of Ameristeel Corporation, the second largest manufacturer of structural steel in the United States .

Today, half of the group's 26 smelters are split between North and South America . The largest branches outside of Brazil are in Argentina , Colombia and Uruguay . In addition to iron ore from its own mines, Gerdau primarily processes large quantities of scrap, making it a pioneer in Latin America. The annual production is around 18 million tons (2010), which roughly corresponds to the production capacity of the Thyssen Krupp group.

Gerdau SA makes most of its steel production from steel and iron waste. These are processed in so-called mini mills . The rest of the steel production is covered by the processing of iron ore . The crude steel is processed directly into the end products.
