Localiza is a Brazilian company based in Belo Horizonte in the state of Minas Gerais that specializes in car rental. It has 594 offices in major cities and airports in Brazil, as well as Argentina , Paraguay , Ecuador , Bolivia , Colombia , Peru , Uruguay and Chile . In addition to renting, Localiza is also active in the field of leasing and fleet management and handles the sale of used vehicles through a franchising subsidiary.
The company was listed on the Brazilian stock exchange Bovespa on May 20, 2005 .
It was founded in 1973 after the first oil shock and started with six used Volkswagens and currently has more than 7,000 employees, over 584 agencies and (as of 2018) a fleet of over 222,000 vehicles. It rents out Volkswagen, Fiat , Renault , Chevrolet , Jeep and other automotive companies. Localiza competes in Latin America with Movida, Locamerica-Unidas and other car rental companies.
In 1984 Localiza introduced the franchise strategy in response to the 1983 debt crisis .
Localiza began selling its used cars directly to end users in 1991. This type of sale allowed the company to reduce its depreciation costs and generate the revenue for the renewal of the vehicle fleet.
