history

Sabesp began operations in 1973 to implement the PLANASA National Health Plan, a Brazilian government program that financed capital investments and helped develop state-run water and sanitation companies, with funding from the FGTS (Workers' Severance Pay Fund). Since then, other public or state-owned companies related to water supply and sanitation have been amalgamated in Sabesp.

In the 1980s, Sabesp invested in wastewater collection and treatment in the state of São Paulo . In 1985 the Greater São Paulo water flow program was completed, benefiting 13 million people. In 1992, Sabesp signed agreements to clean up the Tietê River and the Guarapiranga Reservoir.

In 2002, Sabesp joined the Novo Mercado trading segment of the securities, commodities and futures exchanges - Brasil, Bolsa, Balcão3. The company has also been registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The shares were traded on the New York Stock Exchange as Level III ADRs ( American Depository Receipts ). In 2004, the State of São Paulo launched a new public offering of registered shares in the Brazilian and international markets.

According to São Paulo State Law No. 119/73, which formed the basis of Sabesp's creation, the São Paulo State Treasury Department must directly or indirectly control at least half of Sabesp's voting capital.

In 2008 Sabesp decided to expand geographically and offer new services in the field of environmental hygiene and energy. For this purpose, the company Sesamm - Serviços de Sanéamento de Mogi Mirim SA was founded with the companies OHL Médio Ambiente, Inima SAU, Técnicas y Getion Medioambiental SAU and Estudos Técnicos e Projetos ETEP Ltda .

In September 2017, Provincial Law 16525/17 was passed, authorizing the São Paulo government to set up a controlling company that holds all the shares in Sabesp, owned by the São Paulo state government.
