history

The company was founded in 1929 by the Americans John Lee, Glen Matson, James Marshall and Batson Borger, who had left the United States for Buenos Aires to open a business in the low-price segment, following a pattern already in the USA and Europe at the beginning of the 20th century was successful. On the crossing they met the Austrian Max Landesmann, who should also be one of the founders of the company. During the visit to Rio de Janeiro, the Americans realized that there were many civil and military employees with regular but modest incomes. Most of the existing stores were expensive and specialized, forcing a customer to find different stores for their needs. The founders wanted to offer a wider range of products at affordable prices.

In 1929 the first store opened in Niterói with the slogan: “Nothing is more expensive than 2000 Réis.” At the end of the first year there were already four branches: three in Rio de Janeiro and one in Sao Paulo.

In 1940 Lojas Americanas went public on the Brazilian stock exchange. In 1982 the company was taken over by Banco Garantia . In 1994 Wal-Mart Brasil SA was founded, a joint venture between Lojas Americanas SA (with a share of 40%) and the American retail chain Walmart (with a share of 60%). In 1997 the company decided to sell 40% of the shares in Lojas Americanas SA to Walmart Inc. In 1998 it was decided to sell the 23 food supermarkets and to concentrate on the core business of discounters as well as technology and logistics. In 1999 the real estate activities and the participation in São Carlos Empreendimentos were outsourced. Americanas.com was founded in the same year. In 2000, the share capital of Americanas.com by issuing new shares worth 40 million was US dollars increased. In 2003, expansion was driven forward with the opening of 16 new branches and Americanas Express , a concept with smaller shops, was founded. In January 2007 the company acquired BWU , owner of the blockbuster brand in Brazil. This added 127 branches to the chain. The Semper Mais Brasil program was launched in 2009, which envisaged the opening of 400 new branches by 2013 and doubled the number of branches. In the following years the number of branches increased continuously.
