TIM Brasil SA is the third largest mobile communications company in Brazil with around 10,300 employees. It was founded in 1998 and was formerly part of Telecom Italia Mobile ( TIM ) before it was merged with Telecom Italia in 2016 .

TIM Brasil SA manages TIM Participações in Rio de Janeiro , to which two companies belong:

  • TIM Cellular SA (TCSL3; from the merger of TIM Sul SA and TIM Cellular SA ) and
  • TIM Nordeste SA (TCSL4; from the merger of TIM Nordeste Telecomunicações SA and SA Maxitel )

Both companies are traded on the Bovespa (TELE CL SUL ON (TCSL3) and TELE CL SUL PN (TCSL4)).

history

On May 22, 1998, the Brazilian government organized some regional mobile communications companies in the two companies Tele Mobil Sul Participações SA and Tele Mobil Participações Nordeste SA .

On July 29, 1998, a consortium of UGB Participações Ltda and Bitel Participações SA took control of the companies from the government. Tele Mobil Sul went public on September 21, 1998 on the Bovespa and on November 16, 1998 on the New York Stock Exchange .

On December 15, 1998, UGB Participações sold its stake to Bitel . Telecom Italia bought the shares of UGB on March 26, 1999, after approval by the cartel authority (Cade).

On January 30, 2001 Telecom Italia acquired licenses for the construction of the GSM 900 and DCS 1800 networks. Between 2001 and June 2006 sub-companies were merged and reorganized again and again.

In 2002, network coverage of just over 92 percent was achieved in over 2500 cities in Brazil. The TIM network offers GSM , GPRS , EDGE , UMTS , HSDPA and LTE .

TIM was the first mobile communications provider to introduce UMTS mode in the prepaid area. For a daily price of ten reais , 250 MB of data can be accessed in 24 hours.

With TIM LIVE, TIM offers a fixed network service based on VDSL2 in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro . There are two speeds: 35 and 50 Mbit / s downstream and 20 Mbit / s upstream.

Customer data

At the end of 2008, TIM Brasil had around 29.832 million prepaid and 6.571 million postpaid, for a total of 36.402 million mobile customers. With around 150.6 million mobile phone customers in Brazil, that makes up a market share of 24.16 percent.
