The Bolsa de Valores, Mercadorias e Futuros de São Paulo - officially BM & FBovespa SA in São Paulo for short, is the stock exchange of Brazil . BM & FBovespa was created in May 2008 from the merger of the Bolsa de Valores de São Paulo (Bovespa) and the Bolsa de Mercadorias e Futuros .

Since the reform in 2000, Bovespa has been the only stock exchange in the country and, with a 70% market share, it is also the largest trading center for stocks in Latin America .

The Bovespa was founded on August 23, 1890 by Emilio Rangel Pestana at Rua 15 de Novembro in São Paulo. The stock exchange was a state institution until 1966 and was only transformed into a private non-profit organization in that year . It was operated by 93 brokerage firms.

The market capitalization of all companies listed on the stock exchange was 931 billion US dollars in August 2017 , making them one of the 20 largest stock exchanges in the world by market capitalization. The stock market is known for its high volatility.

Stock indices

The most important financial indices of the Bovespa are the Bovespa index (Ibovespa), which shows 80% of the market capitalization , and the index Bovespa 50 ( IBrX-50 ) with the 50 most important companies in Brazil. There is also the Dow Jones Brazil Index in USD, which belongs to the Dow Jones Global Index family. In total, Dow Jones calculates 65 country indices that represent 98% of world market capitalization. The totality of the sub-indices measures both the sectors and the size of the stock segments for each country. A total of around 394 (2006) companies are traded on the Bovespa.
