In March 1998, CPFL Energia (formerly "Draft II") was formed by VBC, 521 partners and Bonaire to consolidate the interests of investors in power generation and distribution companies.
In August 2002, the majority shareholders of CPFL Energia decided to transfer their direct stakes in CPFL Paulista and CPFL Geração to CPFL Energia. The aim of this shift was to consolidate electricity generation and distribution assets and to simplify their operational and corporate structures. With this reorganization, CPFL Energia became a holding company in control to foster synergies between the group companies.
In October 2004, the company went public by issuing new shares while the majority shareholders sold their shares at the same time. This offering was conducted both in Brazil and overseas, with the shares of the Brazilian offering listed on BOVESPA, while the international offering, which included the issuance of American Depositary Receipts (ADS), was listed on the New York Stock Exchange .
CPFL Energia acquired or established the following companies:
- Established CPFL Brasil in August 2002.
- Acquisition of CPFL Santa Cruz in October 2006 through the inclusion of 4 additional partners.
- Acquisition of CMS Energy Brasil SA in April 2007.
- Founding of CPFL Atende in August 2008.
- Establishment of NECT Serviços in the 3rd quarter of 2010.
- Acquisition of CPFL Renováveis in July 2011
- Establishment of CPFL Centrais Geradoras in July 2013.
CPFL Energia has acquired all of the minority shareholders' shares in the following companies:
- CPFL Geração in June 2005.
- CPFL Paulista and CPFL Piratininga in November 2005.
- RGE in December 2007.
In April 2010 the shares in the following companies were taken over:

CPFL Eficiência Energética SA ("CPFL ESCO") was founded to offer in particular advisory and management services in the field of energy efficiency , in addition to the rental of equipment for power generation units, participation in energy trading markets, research and development projects related to energy programs and investments in other companies .
On October 31, 2014, the company undertook a corporate reorganization with the spin-off of the assets of CPFL Serviços, which related to the rental, maintenance and operation of diesel power plants. These assets were transferred from CPFL Serviços to CPFL ESCO.
