Cielo SA is the largest Brazilian credit and debit card operator and one of the largest payment systems companies in Latin America . Cielo has 1.8 million cardholders among its customers.
Banco Bradesco and Banco do Brasil each hold 28.65% of the shares .
history
The company was founded in November 1995 when Visa Inc. and the banks Bradesco, Banco do Brasil, ABN Amro Real (later merged into Santander Brasil ) and the former Banco Nacional agreed on a joint venture to create a common infrastructure and that all banks are now issuing the VisaNet card instead of each bank using a separate technological solution to process credit card transactions. The Companhia Brasileira de Meios de Pagamento ("Brazilian Society for Payment Methods") was launched. The company then adopted the trade name VisaNet, a trademark licensed by Visa International.
On July 1, 2010, VisaNet was renamed Cielo ("heaven") and was no longer the only processor of Visa cards in Brazil after the Brazilian government introduced a new regulation. The main competitor Rede was now also allowed to process Visa cards and Cielo was then allowed to process Mastercard , Diners Club and other cards that were previously only issued by Redecard.
