Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional ( CSN ) is a listed Brazilian mining company with headquarters in Rio de Janeiro . The company is part of the IBOVESPA share index .

CSN's main plant is in the city of Volta Redonda in the state of Rio de Janeiro . Benjamin Steinbruch is the managing director.

CSN was founded on April 9, 1941 as a state-owned company by the Brazilian government under President Getúlio Vargas . The company was founded as a result of an agreement between the US and Brazilian governments against the backdrop of the Second World War. Since 1946, under the presidency of Eurico Gaspar Dutra, the company was subordinate to the goal of developing the Brazilian economy.

In 1993, CSN was privatized under the National Program for Privatization by the Itamar Franco government.

The main plants are in Volta Redonda, in the Vale do Paraibo region (in the south of the state of Rio de Janeiro). CSN's iron ore mines are located in the towns of Congonhas and Arcos, both in the state of Minas Gerais . The coal mines are in Siderópolis, in the state of Santa Catarina .

CSN also controls the logistics company MRS Logística SA , FCN, in the rail sector. CSN owns the Igarapava and Itá hydropower plants and other factories in the United States (acquisition of Hearland Steel ) and Portugal.

In 2006 CSN submitted a takeover bid for the Corus mining company . However, the company was taken over by the Indian competitor Tata Steel .

The Thuringia steelworks in Unterwellenborn has been part of the CSN Group since February 2012 .
