Tata Steel is a global coal and steel company belonging to the Tata Group and headquartered in Mumbai , India . It is one of the world's largest steel companies with a capacity of around 27.5 million tons and around 75,000 employees on five continents. The European headquarters are in London . The company is listed on the Indian National Stock Exchange and the Bombay Stock Exchange , while global depository receipts are also traded on the London Stock Exchange . The company's product range includes most industrial steels.

In 2018, Tata Steel was ranked eleventh in the list of the world's largest steel producers, with an annual output of 27.27 million tons of crude steel. The largest production facility is in Jamshedpur, India . In 2013, Tata Steel was ranked 471 in the Fortune Global 500 ranking of the world's largest companies. According to the Brand Finance Global 500 Ranking , the Tata Group was able to improve its position in 2014 from 39th place to 34th place, and it is still in first place among Indian brands.
In Europe, Tata Steel is currently one of the largest steel producers with an annual European crude steel capacity of 10 million tons. The group operates steel mills in Great Britain and the Netherlands , and Tata Steel also owns steel rolling mills , coating plants and processing plants across Europe. In total, Tata Steel operates steelworks in 26 countries, including China, India, Singapore, Thailand and Great Britain, as well as sales offices in more than 35 countries.
Company history
The origins of Tata Steel date back to August 25, 1907, when Dorabji Tata founded the steel and iron division called Tata Iron and Steel Company (TISCO) as part of the Tata group that his father Jamshedji Tata insisted in Mumbai in 1868 Had called life.
Four years after it was founded, TISCO put the first blast furnace into operation in Sakchi, India . The planned town there, which was built to house the employees of the main steelworks, was later renamed "Jamshedpur" in honor of Jamshedji Tata. Just a year later, the Dorabji Tata plant was producing its first raw steel block. By 1939, Tata Steel was able to produce 800,000 tons of steel annually. This made Jamshedpur the largest steel mill in the former British Empire . In the decades that followed, the company made a name for itself as the world's cheapest producer of pig iron. The 1990s were characterized by large-scale renovations and a new growth path. The focus was on technical upgrades and the optimization of IT systems, as well as a strategic realignment that provided for a stronger customer focus.
From 2004, the Group drew attention through acquisitions abroad at: Sun Tata Steel acquired the company NatSteel of Singapore that a steel mill in China has. The takeover of the steel company Millennium Steel PCL from Thailand followed a year later . Tata Steel has also been present as a producer on the European steel market since 2007, after the British-Dutch steel group Corus became part of the Tata Steel group. Corus emerged in 1999 from the merger of British Steel and Koninklijke Hoogovens . With an investment of 8.7 billion euros, it was the largest takeover of a foreign company by an Indian group to date. In 2010 Corus officially changed its name to Tata Steel.
In 2012, Ratan Tata retired as chairman of the Tata group. He was followed by Cyrus Mistry , a board member of Tata Sons , whose family has been closely associated with the Tata group for decades. In October 2016, Mistry was dismissed and Ratan Tata temporarily took over the management of the company again. On February 21, 2017, Natarajan Chandrasekaran, who had previously been Managing Director of Tata Consultancy Services , took over the chairmanship of the Tata Group .
On September 20, 2017, the company announced its intention to merge its European steel activities with the European steel division of ThyssenKrupp . After the merger, the group headquarters should be relocated to Amsterdam in the Netherlands and the future group name should be Thyssenkrupp Tata Steel . On June 30, 2018 it was reported that the planned merger of the steel division of ThyssenKrupp and the European steel business of Tata Steel had been approved by the boards and was about to be signed. This should create Europe's second largest steel group with 48,000 employees. On May 10, 2019, it was announced that the merger would not take place due to the impending prohibition by the European Commission. On June 11, 2019, the EU Commission published its decision not to approve the planned merger due to competition concerns.
Tata Steel in Europe
In Europe, Tata Steel operates as Tata Steel Europe Limited , while business activities are carried out under the Tata Steel brand . The European branch of the company supplies steel products to the construction, automotive and packaging industries, mechanical engineering and other sectors around the world. The product portfolio focuses on steel strip products . In April 2016, the investment firm Greybull Capital took over the European long steel division of Tata Steel. The largest European production sites are in Port Talbot ( Wales ) and Ijmuiden ( Netherlands ).
As CEO of the Tata Group , Cyrus Mistry was responsible for the worldwide business activities of Tata Steel and was therefore also responsible for the European market until 10/2016. With effect from July 1, 2019, the previous Chief Commercial Officer Henrik Adam took over the position of CEO of Tata Steel in Europe from Hans Fischer. He took over the position on March 1, 2016 and was Chief Technical Officer until then. Until February 2016, the CEO of the European division was Karl-Ulrich Köhler . Tata Steel in Germany
Tata Steel's agencies in Germany produce, distribute and sell various steel and aluminum products for the national and international markets. It supplies the aerospace, automotive, construction, transportation, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering industries. criticism
In 2006 there were protests among the local population against the planned construction of a steel factory by Tata Steel in Kalinganagar in the Indian state of Odisha. The reasons for the protests were unresolved property claims. In connection with this, 13 protesters and one police officer lost their lives in a demonstration.
The Tata Group came under fire in 2008 because the land provided by the West Bengal government on which a factory to manufacture the Tata Nano car was to be built had previously been expropriated under dubious circumstances. There were violent protests and the completed work was blocked. As a result, conflicts arose within the local population between the factory supporters, who were hoping for a job in the new factory, and the opponents of the factory building. Finally, Ratan Tata received an offer from Narendra Modi, the prime minister of the state of Gujarat, to build the factory for the production of the Tata Nano in Gujarat.
