Hindustan Unilever Limited , formerly Hindustan Lever Limited (also known as HLL ) is an Indian consumer goods company with headquarters in Mumbai . The company is listed in the BSE Sensex share index.

The company is India's largest consumer goods manufacturer and employs around 16,000 people (as of 2014). The company is 67.25 percent owned by the British-Dutch group Unilever .

As a consumer goods manufacturer, HUL is the market leader in India in trading tea, soaps, detergents and other household products.

The company was founded in 1933 under the company name Lever Brothers India Limited .

Shakti project in rural India

Together with the governments of various Indian states , Hindustan Unilever launched the Shakti (in German: Kraft) project. The aim of this public-private partnership is to allow the poor rural population of India to participate directly in economic life and thus to sustainably raise the standard of living in rural regions.

The Shakti project is one of the many examples of successful cooperation between business , governments and non-governmental organizations as part of the Base of the Pyramid approach.
