As of March 31, 2015, the company's market capitalization was  around $ 35 billion, making it one of the largest publicly traded companies in India and the seventh largest IT service provider in the world.

history

The early formative years

The company was founded on December 29, 1945 in Mumbai by Mohamed Premji as “Western India Vegetable Products Limited”, which was later abbreviated to “Wipro”. It was originally intended as a producer of vegetable and refined oils in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India under the trade names Kisan, Sunflower and Camel. The company logo still features a sunflower, reflecting the original company. In 1966, after Mohamed Premji's death, his son Azim Premji returned home from Stanford University and took over the chairmanship of Wipro at the age of 21. During the 1970s and 1980s, the company shifted its focus to the information technology and computer industries, which was beginning to develop in India at that time. On June 7, 1977, the company's name was changed from Western India Vegetable Products Limited to Wipro Products Limited. The year 1980 finally marked the arrival of Wipro in the IT sector. In 1982 the name was changed again, this time from Wipro Products Limited to Wipro Limited. Wipro expanded steadily in the consumer goods sector, including with “Ralak”, a Tulsi-based soap for the whole family, and “Wipro Jasmine”, a toilet soap.

1966-1992

In 1988 Wipro diversified its product range with heavy industrial cylinders and mobile hydraulic cylinders. A joint venture with the US company General Electric under the name Wipro GE Medical Systems Pvt. Ltd. was started in 1989 for the manufacture, sales and service of diagnostic and image processing products. In 1991, tilt systems and Eaton hydraulic products were launched. In 1992 the “Wipro Fluid Power” division brought in the relevant expertise to manufacture standard hydraulic cylinders for construction equipment and dump truck systems. In 1990, “Santoor talcum powder” and the “Wipro Baby Soft” baby product line were finally launched on the market.

1994-2000

In 1995, Wipro opened a design center ("Odyssey 21") to carry out projects and product developments in the field of advanced technologies for customers overseas. Wipro Infotech and Wipro Systems were merged with Wipro in April of the same year. In 1999 Wipro Acer was acquired. With its many new products like Wipro SuperGenius PCs, Wipro has become a more profitable, multi-faceted company. Incidentally, the SuperGenius PCs were the only Indian computers to receive certification from the US National Software Testing Laboratory (NSTL) in 1999 for “Year 2000” (Y2K) compliance in the hardware area for all models. Wipro Limited teamed up with global telecommunications giant KPN (Royal Dutch Telecom) to create a joint venture company called "Wipro Net Limited" for Internet services in India. In 2000, Wipro launched solutions for convergent networks for Internet and telecommunications solution providers under the names Wipro OSS Smart and Wipro WAP Smart. In the same year Wipro was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. In early 2000, Wipro's vice chairman Vivek Paul and Azim Premji approached KPMG Consulting vice chairman Keyur Patel and CEO Rand Blazer to start a mega-outsourcing joint venture between their organizations.

2001 – present

With the introduction of Wipro Smartlite, the Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting Group entered the compact fluorescent lamp market. As the company continued to grow, a study found that Wipro was the fastest wealth generator in 5 years (1997-2002). In the same year, Wipro's own laptops with Intel Centrino mobile processors were launched. Wipro also entered into an exclusive agreement with the Chandrika owners to market their soap products in selected regions of India. A wholly-owned subsidiary, Wipro Consumer Care Limited, was created to manufacture consumer goods and lighting items. In 2004 Wipro joined the Billion Dollar Club and began a partnership with Intel for i-Shiksha. In 2006, Wipro acquired cMango Inc., a US-based enabler for companies providing technology infrastructure consulting and a European retail solution provider. In 2007, Wipro signed a big deal with Lockheed Martin. It also entered into an agreement to acquire Oki Techno Center Singapore Pte Ltd (OTCS) and signed a research and development partnership agreement with Nokia Siemens Networks in Germany. In 2008, Wipro finally ventured into the clean energy business with Wipro Eco Energy. In April 2011, an agreement was made with Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) to acquire its global oil and gas IT division of the commercial business services unit. Wipro finally made its 17th acquisition in the IT sector in 2012 when it acquired the Australian Promax Applications Group (PAG) for $ 35 million. Wipro became the employer with the largest number of H-1B Visa employees in the United States in 2012. In 2012, Wipro Ltd. announced the spin-off of its Consumer Care & Lighting (including the furniture business), Infrastructure Engineering (hydraulic & water business) and Medical Diagnostic Product & Services divisions. These became the independent company Wipro Enterprises Ltd. Wipro's proposed settlement for this spin-off took effect on March 31, 2013.
