Azim Premji (born July 24, 1945 in Bombay ) is an Indian entrepreneur ; he is India's fourth richest billionaire after Lakshmi Mittal , Mukesh Ambani and Anil Ambani .

Azim Premji is a Shiite Muslim and ethnic Gujarati . He was studying engineering at Stanford University when he learned of his father's sudden death in 1966 and took over the family's vegetable oil company. Under his leadership, his company Wipro expanded into the software business and is now the world's largest independent research and development provider and India's largest outsourcing company.

Premji ranks 48th on Forbes Magazine's annual 2015 list of the world's richest people with personal wealth of $ 19.1 billion.

Premji is married and has two sons. His charitable foundation , the Azim Premji Foundation , aims to promote and improve school education in India. In 2005 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan and in 2011 the Padma Vibhushan .

German-language scam mails have been circulating since 2020 , which supposedly promise high sums of money to the recipient in Premji's name. The actual Azim Premji charity warns of these.
