The Echo Lake [ ˈekəʊ leɪk ] ("Echosee") is a lake in the US state of Colorado - about 70 km west of Denver in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains .
It is about halfway along the Mount Evans Scenic Byway from Idaho Springs to Mount Evans ( 4,348 m ).
Echo Lake is a shallow, nutrient-poor lake at an altitude of around 3,230 m . It was created when the glaciers in the Chicago Creek Valley retreated around 10,000 years ago and the surrounding moraines acted as a natural dam preventing water from flowing into the valleys. Engelmann spruces and subalpine firs as well as some Nevada pines in clear places form the ecosystem around the Echosee.
Echo Lake forms the center of Echo Lake Park , which was incorporated into the Denver Mountain Park System in 1920.
