The Mount Evans is the highest and most famous mountain in the Front Range , a mountain range of the Rocky Mountains , in Clear Creek County , Colorado , USA . At 4,350 meters (14,264 feet) in height, it is one of the 54 so-called Fourteeners in Colorado, the peaks over 14,000 feet in height. Of these, it is the closest to the city of Denver , the distance is approximately 70 km. It towers over Pikes Peak near Colorado Springs by about 50 meters.
The mountain was originally named Mount Rosa or Mount Rosalie (after the wife of the landscape painter Albert Bierstadt , to whom the first ascent is ascribed). In 1895 , the mountain was renamed in honor of the second governor of the Colorado Territory , John Evans .
In addition to Pikes Peak and Mount Bierstadt, Mount Evans shapes the image of the Front Range when approaching the Rocky Mountains from the east over the Great Plains .
Between Mount Evans and Pikes Peak, there has always been some competition for tourist attention. After a toll road had been built on Pikes Peak, Denver's then mayor made sure in the early 1970s that the summit of Mount Evans could soon be reached by car. The Mount Evans Scenic Byway is now considered the highest paved road in North America.
Near the summit is the University of Denver's Meyer-Womble Observatory .
The Bob Cook Memorial Mount Evans Hill Climb has been taking place on Mount Evans since 1962.
