Andrea Provana (* 1512 ; † 1592 ) was an admiral of the Duchy of Savoy .

Life

Provana came from a noble family and was Count of Leynì. During the Italian Wars in 1556 he fought against the French at Vercelli . Then he built up the small navy of Duke Emanuel Philibert of Savoy, who in addition to Savoy and Piedmont also owned the county of Nice . The main base of the ducal fleet was in Villafranca near Nice.

Provana took part in numerous battles against North African pirates in the Mediterranean . In the summer of 1564 he participated with Don Garcia de Toledo's Christian fleet in the attack on the fortress of Velez de la Gomera , which was occupied by Muslim pirates and which was captured after three days. With García de Toledo he also fought against the Ottomans on Malta .

In 1571 he led a ducal naval association in the battle of Lepanto .

Honors

The submarine Andrea Provana was named after him in 1915 .
