The Bob Cook Memorial Mount Evans Hill Climb (formerly Mount Evans Hill Climb ) is a cycling hill climb that is held annually in July on Mount Evans (4,350 m high) near Idaho Springs , Colorado in the United States .
The race
The race was first organized in 1962; since then it has taken place annually, with three exceptions: it was canceled twice because of snow and once in 1996 because of the Olympic Games in Atlanta . It was originally called the Mount Evans Hill Climb until it was named Mount Evans Hill Climb in the Bob Cook Memorial in 1981 after five-time winner Bob Cook , who died of a brain tumor that same year at the age of 23 .
The race covers a distance of 41.1 kilometers on the highest paved road in the USA. It starts at an altitude of 2298 meters and ends at 4306 meters, 39 meters below the mountaintop of Mount Evans. The Mount Evans Scenic Byway ( Colorado State Highway 5 ) is the last part of the way. The competition is designed as a race for everyone and is looked after by the local cycling clubs; Between 600 and 1000 drivers take part every year.
Records
From 1975 to 1980, Bob Cook held the record, and was a junior driver for the first three years when he was the record holder. The current record was set in 2004 by Tom Danielson with 1 hour, 41 minutes and 20 seconds. The women's record has been held by multiple French world and Olympic champion Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli with 1:59:19 hour since 1998 .
