biography

Mittal comes from a Marwari family, a commercial caste who moved to Calcutta in 1960 . His middle name ( Narayan , according to other sources Nivas ) is not clearly understood. In 1971 his father Mohan Mittal bought a small steel smelter; he himself was studying business administration at the time and graduated from St. Xavier's College in Calcutta with a Bachelor of Commerce. Mittal then worked in his father's company and in 1976 was commissioned to renovate a dilapidated Indonesian steel mill, which the family had previously acquired for US $ 1.5 million. Mittal achieved this with considerable success, and the Mittal family continued to invest, including in Kazakhstan , where the Karmetwerk was being privatized - in this way, Mittal's steelworks empire grew rapidly. Mittal Steel was based in Rotterdam but was run from Berkeley Square in London by Mittal and his son Aditya . More than 90% of the shares were always family owned. Mittal Steel's largest competitor, Arcelor , was acquired by hostile takeover between 2006 and 2007 , and the merger created the new company ArcelorMittal . Mittal has been Chairman of the Board of Management since the end of 2006.

Mittal is a member of the Foreign Investment Council of Kazakhstan, the International Investment Council of South Africa and the Indian Prime Minister's Global Advisory Council . He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the International Iron & Steel Institute ( worldsteel association ). He is a director of the Indian ICICI bank and a director of Goldman Sachs and the US elite Kellogg School of Management .

Mittal lives near Kensington Palace Gardens , London . He and his wife Usha have a daughter, Vanisha, in addition to their son Aditya. His daughter's wedding to 25-year-old Amit Bhatia, a London financial tycoon, reportedly cost about $ 64 million. The festival was celebrated in France in 2004 in the palaces of Versailles and lasted almost a week.

In 2008 he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan Order of Merit .
