Bharti Airtel (formerly known as Bharti Tele-Ventures Limited ( BTVL )) is a telecommunications company from India with headquarters in New Delhi . The company, which was founded in 1995, offers its services under the Airtel brand in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka . It belongs to the conglomerate Bharti Enterprises . The company is run by Sunil Mittal , one of the richest men in India.

Airtel was India's largest wireless operator with over 85.7 million customers in December 2008.

In 2010, the company acquired Zain's mobile network in 15 African countries ( Burkina Faso , Chad , DR Congo , Congo , Gabon , Ghana , Kenya , Madagascar , Malawi , Niger , Nigeria , Sierra Leone , Tanzania , Uganda and Zambia ) and operates it in Future under the Airtel Africa holding company .
