The Zain Group (formerly MTC or Mobile Telecommunications Company ; Arabic زين, DMG Zain ) is a wireless network operator founded in Kuwait in 1983 under the name MTC and is currently active in the Middle East and Africa . In September 2007 the company was renamed to its current name Zain . Zain was active in 24 countries, but sold the network in 15 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa to the Indian company Bharti Airtel , which converted it into the Airtel Africa holding company , and at that time still operated networks in nine countries. Since South Sudan's independence , Zain has also been active in Kuwait, Bahrain , Iraq , Jordan , Lebanon , Saudi Arabia and Sudan .

Zain had sales of $ 3.6 billion in 2016 with over 47 million customers.
