Airtel Africa is an international mobile operator based in Amsterdam , the Netherlands .

Starting out as MSI Cellular Investments , the subsidiary of the Kuwaiti mobile phone group Zain operated a GSM network in several African countries under the name Celtel , which was used from 2004 to 2008 . As a special feature, Celtel offered its network across national borders without additional roaming surcharges . This related to the countries of Gabon, Kenya, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda and Tanzania. In 2008, Celtel was bought by Zain before the company was sold to Bharti Airtel again in 2010 and became Airtel Africa .

Airtel Africa is active in Burkina Faso , Chad , Democratic Republic of the Congo , Republic of the Congo , Gabon , Ghana , Kenya , Malawi , Madagascar , Niger , Nigeria , Rwanda , Seychelles , Sierra Leone , Tanzania , Uganda and Zambia . The company had over 78 million customers in March 2017.

On March 4, 2017, Tigo and Airtel Africa announced their subsidiary Airtel Ghana Ltd. in Ghana. and Tigo Ghana Ltd. to merge to create the second largest mobile operator in the country. Both companies own the same number of shares.
