Millicom International Cellular (MIC) sells a wide range of digital products and services for over 45 million customers under the brand "tigo" in 15 emerging countries in Africa and Latin America. The focus of the company, which was founded in 1990, is the mobile communications business, but today it also offers cable television, broadband Internet and e-commerce (due to an investment in Rocket Internet), as well as other media services.

In March 2013, Hans-Holger Albrecht announced the new growth strategy: Annual sales are to be doubled to USD 9 billion by 2017. Millicom employs over 10,000 people, is headquartered in Luxembourg and is listed under the name MIC on NASDAQ OMX in Stockholm.

South and Central America

Guatemala

The introduction of the TIGO brand in Guatemala was carried out in 2004 to replace the old national brands COMCEL and Amigo de COMCEL with a new international brand. TIGO Guatemala is the largest cell phone operator in Guatemala with over five million cell phone customers (as of August 2009). Competitors such as the international mobile network operators Movistar ( Telefónica ) and Claro ( America Movil ) use the AMPS / TDMA and GSM / GPRS / EDGE technology with 850 MHz. TIGO Guatemala has been operating UMTS / HSPA over 850 MHz commercially since 2008.

El Salvador

TIGO - introduced as a brand in El Salvador in 2004 - replaced the old national brand TELEMOVIL . TIGO El Salvador is the largest mobile operator in El Salvador with more than 2.4 million users. Competitors in the market are Movistar ( Telefónica ), Claro ( America Movil ), Digicel ( Digicel Group ) and Red (Infonet), which use GSM / GPRS and UMTS technology over 850 MHz.

Honduras

In 2004, TIGO was introduced as a brand in Honduras, replacing the old national brand Celtel . TIGO Honduras is the largest network operator with more than four million customers (with a population of 7.5 million). Competitors are Claro ( America Movil ), Digicel ( Digicel Group ) and the state-owned Hondutel , which use GSM / GPRS and UMTS technology with a transmission frequency of 850 MHz.

Paraguay

TIGO was also launched in Paraguay in 2004, replacing the old national brand TELECEL . TIGO Paraguay is the largest mobile operator in Paraguay with more than 2.8 million customers. The company is in competition with Personnel (Telecom Argentina / Telecom Italia), Claro ( America Movil ) and VOX ( KDDI ), who use GSM / EDGE and WCDMA / HSDPA on the transmission frequency 850 MHz.

Bolivia

TIGO was introduced in 2005 and replaced the old brand name TELECEL BOLIVIA . TIGO Bolivia is the second largest cellular operator in the country with over 1.3 million users. The competitors in the market are Entel (Telecom Italia) and Nuevatel PCS. These use AMPS / TDMA and GSM / GPRS technology on an 850 MHz basis. Tigo is the first company to offer UMTS technology.

Colombia

TIGO replaced the former Colombia Móvil brand in 2006 . Millicom holds 51% of the company. TIGO Colombia started with 3.6 million customers. Tigo competes with COMCEL ( America Movil ) and Movistar ( Telefónica ) and uses GSM / GPRS / EDGE technology on a 1900 MHz basis.

Africa

Ghana

TIGO was introduced in Ghana in 2006 and replaced the MOBITEL brand . Competitors are the South African MTN , Zain and [Vodafone Ghana]. The GSM / GPRS / EDGE technology is used on a 900 MHz and 1800 MHz basis.

On March 4, 2017, Tigo and Airtel Africa announced their subsidiary Airtel Ghana Ltd. in Ghana. and Tigo Ghana Ltd. to merge to create the second largest mobile operator in the country. Both companies own the same number of shares.

Congo (Democratic Republic of the Congo)

TIGO was launched in 2007, replacing the old OASIS brand . Competitors such as Airtel Africa , Supercell , Vodacom and Congo Chine Telecom use GSM / GPRS / EDGE 1800 MHz.

Tanzania

In 2006 TIGO was introduced to the market for the old brand MIC Tanzania Limited .

Chad

TIGO was introduced in Chad in 2007 , replacing the old national brand. The competition (e.g. Zain ) uses the GSM / GPRS / EDGE technology over 900 MHz.

Mauritius

Here the company appears on the market under the name Emtel . It competes with Orange (formerly Cellplus) and MTML, which used the GSM / GPRS and UMTS / HSDPA technology over 900, 1800 and 2100 MHz. Emtel also operates a broadband network under the name Wimax.

Rwanda

Since receiving the broadcast license in 2008, the network has been operated under the name Tigo . Competitors are Rwandacell ( MTN ) and Airtel.

Asia

Sri Lanka

The brand was launched in January 2007 and replaced the old brand name CELLTEL . In Asia it was the first network to be operated under the name TIGO. TIGO is the third largest provider in the market. The international competitors Dialog Telekom ( Telekom Malaysia ), Mobitel ( Sri Lanka Telecom ), Hutch ( Hutchison ) and Airtel ( Bharti Airtel ) use the GSM / EDGE technology.

Laos

Tigo was launched in Laos in 2007, replacing the old national brand. Tigo Laos is the second largest network operator. On September 16, 2009 it was announced that Millicom will sell its 74% stake in Tigo Laos to Vimpelcom by the end of the year .

Cambodia

Here the company appears on the market under the name Cellcard Mobitel . However, the brand will also be replaced by TIGO. It competes with Starcell, Cambodia Advance Communications, Cambodia Shinawatra, and Hello GSM ( Telekom Malaysia International ). The competitors used the technology GSM / GPRS / EDGE with 900 MHz. On August 11, 2009, Millicom announced that it would sell its 58% stake to its partner Royal Group by year-end.
