The Mobile Telephone Networks (MTN) Group is an in South Africa Canada based multinational telecommunications companies , which in several African countries and in the Middle East operates.

Business activity

The MTN Group is active in 21 countries and describes itself as the "Leader in Telecommunications in Africa and the Middle East". Africa has been the fastest growing mobile communications market in the world since 2000.

MTN is mainly active in the field of mobile communications . The company has 98 million customers (as of March 2009), with Nigeria (25.9 million), Iran (18.3 million) and South Africa (17.4 million) being the most important markets.

2007 MTN recorded a turnover of 73.1 billion Rand (ZAR), which represented an increase of 42% over the previous year. Earnings before interest and taxes ( EBITDA ) for the same period was ZAR 31.8 billion. In 2008 sales increased by a further 40% to ZAR 102.5 billion, while EBITDA rose by 36% to ZAR 43.2 billion.

In 2009, the MTN Group generated ZAR 111.9 billion. In 2010 they were able to increase sales to ZAR 114.7 billion. The profit before taxes increased in 2010 compared to the previous year from 46.1 billion ZAR to 50.5 billion ZAR.

history

In 1994, the pay-TV operator M-Net founded the M-Cell holding company, the only asset of which was a 25% share in MTN Holding. From 1997 to 1999 expansion began with the acquisition of licenses in Rwanda , Uganda and Swaziland . By 1998 M-Cell increased its stake in MTN to 39.7%, by 2000 M-Cell took over MTN completely.

In 2002 M-Cell was renamed MTN Group Limited. In 2006 Investcom LLC was acquired for $ 5.526 billion.

In November 2015, Nigeria fined $ 5.2 billion for five million unregistered SIM cards that were left unchecked. The penalty was approximately half of the company's annual turnover.

MTN shares are listed on the Johannesburg stock exchange, 72.5% of the shares are in free float , 18.7% are owned by employees and management.

In the S&P Africa 40 Index , newly created in 2008 , MTN is the company with the highest weighting.

Key figures

In 2009, MTN had 120 million customers in 21 countries, including 16 million in South Africa. The turnover was 112 billion rand. 20% of this is in South Africa, the rest in the other countries.

The company was one of the main sponsors of the 2010 Soccer World Cup and sponsored the international cycling team MTN Qhubeka from 2008 to 2015 .
