The Bayonne Bridge is one of the largest steel arch bridges in the world. It connects Bayonne, NJ , to Staten Island , New York City . The main purpose of the bridge is to connect road traffic from Staten Island to Manhattan via the Holland Tunnel . Measured by its span , it is the fifth largest arch bridge in the world, but the similar Sydney Harbor Bridge is significantly wider. The bridge was designed by Othmar Ammann and the architect Cass Gilbert . It was built by the Port of New York Authority and opened on November 15, 1931. As part of the expansion of the Panama Canal , the road deck was rebuilt by 2017, which increased the clear height from 46 to 66 meters.
history
Ammann chose the steel arch design after discarding both a suspension bridge and a cantilever bridge that would have been too costly and impractical in the planned location. The design of the bridge is a parabolic arch that rises 69 meters above the Kill Van Kull . The total length of the bridge including the access ramps is 1762 m (5780 ft). The bridge has a span of 511 m (1675 ft) and an average distance above the water of 46 m. The design of the steel arch was influenced by the Hell Gate Bridge , which was designed by Ammann's mentor, Gustav Lindenthal . Construction of the bridge began in 1928. The approximate cost of construction was $ 13 million.
When it opened in 1931, it had the longest span of any steel arch bridge in the world. It was purposely built 25 feet (7.62 m) longer than the Sydney Harbor Bridge , which started before it but didn't open until a year later. Because of the Bayonne Bridge, the ferry service of the Bergen-Point-Ferry was stopped. The carriageway has two lanes in each direction. A pedestrian walkway is currently the only footpath to Staten Island. The Port of New York Authority also allows bicycle traffic.
In view of the expansion of the Panama Canal and the associated increase in larger and taller container ships , the Port Authority has raised the deck inside the bridge to a clearance height of 66 m. The renovation began in 2013 and road traffic was reopened on February 20, 2017. The new clearance for shipping was made available in mid-2017 and the dismantling of the former access roads is expected to be completed in 2019. [outdated]
The bridge was added to the List of Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1985 .
