Kill Van Kull
Kill Van Kull is the name of a waterway which in York New port area , the Upper New York Bay with the Newark Bay combines and the island of Staten Iceland ( New York City , New York ) of the area of the city Bayonne in New Jersey separates.

The strait , about six kilometers long and about 300 m wide , was named by early Dutch settlers and is one of the busiest waterways in the world. The name Kill comes from the Central Dutch term Kille for ditch, waterway, fairway.
Ferry traffic began here as early as 1820. The Kill Van Kull is the main access route for container ships to the Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal, for this purpose the fairways (Kill Van Kull channel) have been artificially deepened. A trough depth of 15.24 m (50 feet) is desired. The Robbins Reef Lighthouse is located in front of the entrance to Kill Van Kull in Upper New York Bay and warns of the shallow Robbins Reef .
The waterway has been spanned by the Bayonne Bridge since 1931 .
