KK Uniqlo ( Japanese 株式会社 ユ ニ ク ロ , Kabushiki-gaisha Yunikuro ) is the largest clothing retailer in Japan in terms of sales . Uniqlo was founded in Yamaguchi , Japan in 1949 and is part of the Fast Retailing group of companies led by billionaire Tadashi Yanai . This has made the brand into a serious competitor for textile industry giants such as Inditex and H&M within years . There are currently almost 2000 stores worldwide.

history

1974 founded the family business for men's clothing Ogōri Shōji (today Fast Retailing ) the subsidiary Sunroad .

On June 2, 1984, Ogōri Shōji opened a store for unisex everyday clothing in Hiroshima under the name Unique Clothing Warehouse , which was later shortened to Uniqlo . Around 1998, the company began with a private label business model, mostly low-cost fleece products that Uniqlo was able to quickly expand with.

After the restructuring of Fast Retailing as a holding company in 2005, the Uniqlo stores were transferred to the subsidiary Sunroad , which was renamed Uniqlo .

Today the company has around 30,000 employees. Outside of Japan there are Uniqlo stores and the like. a. in China , Hong Kong , South Korea , Malaysia , Singapore , the Philippines , Russia , Great Britain , Thailand , Taiwan , the USA , France , Belgium , Spain and Germany . There are over 1900 shops worldwide, including over 800 in Japan and around 100 in Tokyo (as of February 2018).

The first German branch was opened in Berlin on April 11, 2014. In October 2015, another branch opened on Leipziger Platz in Berlin, and in May 2016 the next one on Hackescher Markt. On October 28, 2016, a branch opened in Stuttgart on Königstrasse .

Uniqlo offers cheaper branded clothing, comparable to Zara , Mango and H&M . We cooperate with some well-known fashion designers, such as Philip Lim and Alexander Wang. From 2009 to 2011, Jil Sander launched her own label + J as Creative Director, which won the Brit Insurance Fashion Award in the Design Museum London in 2011 .

In Japan itself, the image of the Uniqlo brand suffers from its omnipresence. The youth word unibare ( ユ ニ バ レ ) has established itself there - a suitcase word from Uniqlo and bareru , 'come out, come to light' - which makes fun of those who wear them.

The best-known brand representative of Uniqlo has been the Swiss tennis professional Roger Federer since July 2018 .
