KK Fast Retailing ( Japanese 株式会社 フ ァ ー ス ト リ テ イ リ ン グ , Kabushiki kaisha fāsuto riteiringu ) is a Japanese clothing retail group listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in the Nikkei 225 index. The group turnover in the 2011 financial year was 820 billion yen , which corresponds to around 7.7 billion euros . At the beginning of 2015, Fast Retailing had 34,503 employees and is based in Yamaguchi .

Company history

The Japanese businessman Hitoshi Yanai, whose ancestors were already active in the retail business, founded a family business for men's clothing called Ogōri Shōji ( 小 郡 商 事 ) in the western Japanese city of Ube (Yamaguchi) in 1963 . His son Tadashi Yanai , who joined his father's business in 1972, opened a store with inexpensive clothing for teenage boys called Uniqlo in Hiroshima , not far from Ube , in 1984 as a branch of Ogōri Shōji. The clothing offered was initially cheap imported goods and only later bore the brand name Uniqlo. The company was renamed Fast Retailing in 1991 and first went public in Hiroshima in 1994 and then in Tokyo in 1999 . Since then, the brand has established itself as a trendsetter with a fashion-conscious audience worldwide with clothing and accessories for women, men and children with low prices. The company's own online shop opened in 2000. In 2001, the first shop abroad, in London, was opened. Yanai, who is the group's president and largest single shareholder (August 31, 2008: 26.68%), is considered the richest man in Japan. The Forbes magazine estimated his fortune to 10.6 billion.

Group

The most important subsidiary of Fast Retailing is still the chain of stores UNIQLO (women's, men's and children's fashion) with worldwide retail stores. Other sales brands include Comptoir des Cotonniers (women's fashion) Cabin Co. (women's fashion), Princesse tam.tam (lingerie and swimwear) and Foot Park (shoes). The women's fashion brand National Standard , bought in 2004 , was discontinued in 2006. A 60% stake in ASPESI Japan was sold back to the Italian clothing manufacturer Aspesi in 2008 . In 2004, a 32.32% stake in the US-Japanese Link Theory Holdings (LTH) was bought, which sells fashion under the main brands theory and Helmut Lang (the latter had been sold to Theory in 2006 by Prada ). In spring 2009, the stake in LTH was increased to 100% for approx. ¥ 30 billion (approx. € 240 million) and the company was thus integrated into the Fast Retailing Group as a subsidiary. An attempt by Fast Retailing in 2006 to take over Giordano International , its Hong Kong- based major competitor in the Asian market, failed. The attempt in 2007 to take over the US department store chain Barneys New York from the Jones Apparel Group for $ 900 million also failed. Another strong expansion is planned, including to Russia and India.

Uniqlo

Uniqlo (an abbreviation for "unique clothing" in German: unique clothing) is the largest clothing retailer in Japan in terms of sales. Further Uniqlo stores exist in China and Hong Kong, South Korea , Malaysia , Singapore , the Philippines , Russia , Great Britain , Thailand, Taiwan, the USA and France . There are a total of more than 1,100 shops worldwide, including over 700 in Japan and around 100 in Tokyo alone (as of mid-2012). The first German branch was opened in Berlin on April 11, 2014. UNIQLO has around 30,000 employees and offers branded clothing in the lower-priced basics area, comparable to that of Zara , Mango and H&M . We cooperate with some well-known fashion designers, such as Philip Lim and Alexander Wang. From 2009 to 2011, Jil Sander launched her own label + J as Creative Director, which won the Brit Insurance Fashion Award in the Design Museum London in 2011 . She commented on her collaboration with a mass production company that she was attracted by the utopian goal of offering high-quality clothing for the masses. The democratic concept of Uniqlos Basics reminds you of Apple's fantastic design for everyone in connection with Japanese sense of tradition and great know-how.

Comptoir des Cotonniers

The label was founded in Paris in 1995 . She gained notoriety through her marketing campaigns with unprofessional models and mother-daughter auditions. The company successively opened boutiques in Belgium , Germany , Great Britain , South Korea, USA and Japan. It has been part of the Fast Retailing group since 2006, and Delphine Ninous took over creative management in May 2011 after working for brands such as Christian Lacroix , Diane von Furstenberg and Isabel Marant . A light down jacket edition was created for autumn / winter 2012 in cooperation with sister company Uniqlo, which combines the iconic Parisian “boite” style and the ultra-light premium down technology developed for Uniqlo in Japan.
