Cass Gilbert
Cass Gilbert (born November 24, 1859 in Zanesville , Ohio , † May 17, 1934 in Brockenhurst , England ) was an American architect .
He studied at MIT and first worked for the architecture firm McKim, Mead, and White . After several years of independent practice in Minnesota , he managed to establish himself in New York . His Woolworth Building (1910–13) was the tallest building in the world for over 15 years and is considered to have shaped the New York skyscraper style of the 1920s. Another high-rise project that Gilbert has implemented is the New York Life Insurance Building (1925–1928). Between 1926 and 1933 Gilbert was the presidency of the National Academy of Design . Gilbert also designed the classicist United States Supreme Court Building in Washington, DC, built between 1932 and 1935. He also designed the Brooklyn Army Terminal .
In 1906 he was accepted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters . In 1934, the year he died, he was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society .
