The Brooklyn Army Terminal (formerly the New York Port of Embarkation and Army Supply Base or US Army Military Ocean Terminal ) is a complex of buildings in Brooklyn , New York City , which previously served as a loading point for the US Army .

history

The architect of the complex, built in 1918, was Cass Gilbert . From the Second World War until the 1960s, the military transported a large part of the shipments of material and people to Europe from this terminal. On September 23, 1958, Elvis Presley also traveled from there to West Germany for military service. The terminal was sold to the City of New York in 1981 and completely renovated.

The complex includes four piers, the two main buildings with warehouses, cranes, freight and passenger platforms, and other auxiliary buildings. In total, the area, which is located in the Sunset Park district between 53rd and 66th Streets, is approximately 39 acres . The two eight-story main buildings A and B together have an area of ​​around 371,600 m². Building A is located directly on Upper New York Bay . Building B behind it. Above the 279 m long atrium of building B, only the supporting structure of the roof remains. There are two unused platforms in the inner courtyard. A bridge crane on the top floor of the atrium was used to transport goods to the staircase-shaped balconies of the individual warehouses. The two buildings are connected by three bridges. The facade and the atrium are under monument protection.

use

The piers are used as car parking spaces. The New York water taxi stops at Army Terminal and connects the terminal with Manhattan and Queens. The buildings are used as an industrial park.
