Johann Heinrich Stein (banker)

Johann Heinrich Stein (born March 11, 1773 in Mannheim , † June 18, 1820 in Cologne ) was a German banker and the founder of the bank of the same name JH Stein in Cologne.

Life

He came to Cologne in 1790, where, under the influence of the advancing revolutionary ideas , he was able to operate the forwarding and commissioning of merchant goods, combined with bills of exchange , initially only to a limited extent. Together with Hubert Krings, Stein participated in March 1794 as a financier in a tannery and leather shop in Niederweßlingen (today Wesseling ), continuing his Cologne dealership.

On June 16, 1799 he married the doctor's daughter Katharina Maria Peill. The marriage resulted in two sons (Johann Heinrich and Carl Martin) and five daughters (Wilhelmine, Amalie, Pauline, Franziska Juliana and Johanna). The sons (married to Adelaide Herstatt or Sophie Jung) became shareholders in the company in the 1820s. Wilhelmine became the wife of Karl Eduard Schnitzler , who joined the bank in 1822. Amalie married Johann David Herstatt, called Iwan Herstatt, a brother of Adelaide; he was a banker in the banking house Joh. Dav. Herstatt . Pauline became the wife of the politician Georg Jung , they are the parents of Salonnière Anna vom Rath . Franziska Juliana married Ignatz Bürgers . Johanna married the Elberfeld merchant Carl Luckemeyer, they are the parents of Mathilde Wesendonck .
