Gran Chaco is a province in the eastern part of the Tarija Department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
autonomy
In a referendum on December 6, 2009, the Gran Chaco Province declared itself the first autonomous region of Bolivia, the Región Autónoma Chaco Tarijeño . The region is largely cut off from the main town of Tarija by the difficult to negotiate foothills and, as a vast lowland, differs considerably from the rest of the department.
Provincial separatists even sought complete independence for the region, so that the autonomy status represents a compromise. In the Gran Chaco of Tarija there are large reserves of natural gas, the exploitation of which has led to the formation of cities in the area that was almost uninhabited a few decades ago.
The autonomy status also meant that the province received a disproportionately large share of the state income from natural gas exploitation. A large part of the funds are passed on to the districts. Accordingly, the local administrations now have much higher budgets for public investments than in the past. Since 2010, considerable funds have been invested in the construction of infrastructure, schools, market buildings, sports facilities and hospitals.
economy
In addition to the natural gas industry, livestock and agriculture, and to a lesser extent tourism, play a role. Points of attraction are the fish-rich Pilcomayo River, the border trade at Yacuiba , the folklore events and the Serranía Aguaragüe in the west.
The cheese produced in the Gran Chaco is ubiquitous throughout the department , including the typical white and salty Queso Chaqueño and local varieties such as the Queso Caizeño . It is sold in large blocks, offered for sale by vendors to try in all markets, and is an integral part of afternoon tea in many families.
