José María Avilés (also: Avilés or Avilez ) is a province in the western part of the Tarija Department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

location

The province of Avilés is one of six provinces in the Tarija department. It lies between 21 ° 28 'and 22 ° 05' south latitude and between 64 ° 29 'and 65 ° 25' west longitude .

The province borders in the north with the province Eustaquio Méndez , in the west with the department Potosí , in the south with the Republic of Argentina , in the southeast with the province Aniceto Arce , and in the northeast with the province Cercado .

The province extends over a length of 85 kilometers in a north-south direction and over 115 kilometers in an east-west direction and comprises a wide range of landscapes. In the east are the areas around the main town of Valle de Concepción in the Uriondo district , which are known for their viticulture . They are located at an altitude of around 1,850 m and belong to the Valle Central de Tarija . In the east they border on the transition to the elongated mountain ridges of the Voranden . The western district of Yunchará stretches from the valley over a medium level up to the plateau at an altitude of around 3,500 to 3,700 m. This also includes the Cordillera de Sama Biological Reserve and is surrounded by peaks that reach heights of over 4,600 m, the highest in the department. An Andes chain in the west forms the border with Potosí.

population

According to the strong geological differences between the eastern highlands and western valleys, the population also differs significantly. The valley population around the village of Valle de Concepción consists to a large extent of a European country population, most of whom descend from pre-colonial settlers such as the Tomatas, Churumatas and Chichas, but also from Guaraní peoples who mainly settle in subtropical areas. People identify strongly with the typical Chapaco culture of Tarija and tend to orientate themselves towards Argentina . The inhabitants of the plateau, on the other hand, are predominantly to be assigned to the Quechua population, which is why they feel more connected to the inhabitants of the Potosí Department and maintain a highland culture.

The population of the province of Avilés has increased by around a quarter over the past two decades:

  • 1992 : 16,210 inhabitants ( census )
  • 2001 : 17,504 inhabitants (census)
  • 2012 : 20,234 inhabitants (census)

47.6 percent of the population are younger than 15 years. 98.9 percent of the population speak Spanish , 2.4 percent Quechua , and 0.2 percent Aymara . ( 2001 )

77.0 percent of the workforce work in agriculture , 0.1 percent in mining , 3.7 percent in industry , 19.2 percent in the service sector ( 2001 ).

93.9 percent of the population are Catholic , 4.6 percent are Protestant ( 1992 ).

In 1992, 81.6 percent of the population still had no access to electricity and 82.9 percent lived without sanitary facilities , a situation that has fundamentally improved since the provinces of Tarija have had extensive investment funds from natural gas production since 2007.

structure

The province is divided into the following two Municipios (districts):

  • 06-0401 Municipio Uriondo (810 km²) in the eastern part of the province - 14,744 inhabitants - 18.2 inhabitants / km² - predominantly eastern slopes of the eastern Andes
  • 06-0402 Municipio Yunchará (1,827 km²) in the western part of the province - 5,490 inhabitants - 3.0 inhabitants / km² - mainly Altiplano
