Coordinates: 14 ° S , 65 ° W
The Beni department is located in northeastern Bolivia and borders on Brazil . To the northwest lies the Pando Department , La Paz to the west, Cochabamba to the south and Santa Cruz to the southeast . The department extends in the flat lowlands of the Amazon basin over 213,654 km² (roughly the size of Great Britain ) and has 425,780 inhabitants (according to the 2012 census). The capital is Trinidad . Other cities are Rurrenabaque , Riberalta and Guayaramerín .
The climate is generally tropical, warm and humid. During winter (June / July), however, strong southerly winds, so-called surazos, which originate in Patagonia or the Antarctic, can occasionally lead to drastic temperature drops. Beni is rich in water, with numerous lakes and many rivers, and the vegetation consists mainly of tropical rainforest and wet savannah . In January 2014, the state was affected by heavy rainfall (see Extreme rainfall in Bolivia in January 2014 ). The main industries are agriculture, forestry and livestock.
There are significant elevations only in the very west with a few modest foothills of the Voranden . The rest is mostly below 200 m (above sea level).
