San Borja is a medium- sized town in the Beni department in the lowlands of the South American Andean state Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

San Borja is the central place of the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) San Borja in the province of Ballivián . The city is located at an altitude of 197  m on the left bank of the Río Maniqui , a tributary of the Río Rapulo , which flows into the Río Mamoré .

San Borja is located in the Bolivian lowlands, about 50 kilometers east of the Sierra Muchanes , a section of the foothills of the Cordillera Oriental . The region's climate is tropical and humid all year round ; the original vegetation is that of the tropical rainforest .

The mean average temperature of the region is 26 ° C (see climate diagram San Borja) and fluctuates only insignificantly between 23 ° C in June and July and around 27 ° C from October to March. Annual rainfall is 1800 mm, with moderate monthly rainfall of 60 to 70 mm from June to September, and a pronounced rainy season from December to March with monthly rainfall of 200 to 300 mm.

In the wider area of ​​the city lies the Estación Biológica del Beni biosphere reserve .

Transport network

San Borja is located at a distance of 232 kilometers by road west of Trinidad , the capital of the department.

The city is located on the 600-kilometer Ruta 3 highway from La Paz to Trinidad . With the exception of a 50-kilometer section east of La Paz, the road is largely unpaved and therefore not always easy to drive on depending on the weather conditions. It leads from La Paz via Cotapata , Sapecho and Yucumo on a 372-kilometer route to San Borja and on via San Ignacio de Moxos to Trinidad . The closest major city is Rurrenabaque , one hundred kilometers northwest of San Borja .

In the eastern part of the city is the Capitán Germán Quiroga Guardia airport with an asphalt runway 1,800 m long.
