Trinidad (official Spanish name: La Santísima Trinidad ) is the capital of the Beni department in the Amazon lowlands of the South American landlocked state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Trinidad is located about 400 kilometers as the crow flies northeast of La Paz in the Amazon basin on the right bank of the Arroyo San Juan River , which drains to the Río Mamoré . The city is at an altitude of 161  m .

Trinidad has a tropical hot and humid climate all year round . The annual average temperature is 26.2 ° C, with the monthly average temperatures between June / July at a good 23 ° C and October / December at just under 28 ° C only slightly different. The annual precipitation is almost 2000 mm and is therefore more than twice as high as the precipitation in Central Europe. history

Trinidad (Spanish: " Trinity " ) was founded in 1686 as a mission station for the Jesuits on the Río Mamoré; the full place name was actually "La Santísima Trinidad" (Spanish: "the most holy trinity" ). Since the location on the Mamoré turned out to be unfavorable due to flooding, the settlement was moved about 14 kilometers to its current position in 1769.

Transport network

Trinidad is the intersection of the national roads Ruta 3 , which connects Trinidad with La Paz , 602 kilometers away , and Ruta 9 , which crosses the entire Bolivian lowlands from north to south and leads from Trinidad to the metropolis of Santa Cruz , 477 kilometers south . There are daily bus connections to most cities in Bolivia via these highways.

Economy and culture

Trinidad is the seat of the Apostolic Vicariate El Beni o Beni of the Roman Catholic Church. In addition to the private university Univalle, the city also has a public university called Universidad Autónoma del Beni "José Ballivián" (formerly Universidad Técnica del Beni).

The most important industry in the Trinidad region is agriculture, especially cattle breeding.
