Riberalta (Spanish: ribera alta = high bank) is a medium- sized town in the Beni department in the lowlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Riberalta is the administrative capital of the province of Vaca Díez and the central place of the Municipio Riberalta . The city is located at an altitude of 144  m on the right bank of the Río Beni , which flows 156 kilometers downstream into the Río Mamoré , a tributary of the Amazon . The city of Riberalta is created directly opposite the confluence of the Río Madre de Dios in the Río Beni. Because of the rapids of Cachuela Esperanza , located just above the mouth of the Río Beni, the use of the Río Beni as a waterway is only possible to a limited extent despite its width of 500 to 1000 meters.

geography

Riberalta is located in the Bolivian part of the Amazon basin in the northeast corner of the country on the border with Brazil.

The mean average temperature of the region is 26 ° C and fluctuates only marginally between 25 ° C in May and 27–28 ° C from December to February (see Riberalta climate diagram). The annual precipitation is about 1,300 mm, with a pronounced dry season from June to August with monthly precipitation below 20 mm, and a humidity period from December to January with monthly precipitation of more than 200 mm.

history

Riberalta was founded by the Swiss Federico Bodo Clausen and the Hamburg-based Máximo Henicke on May 3, 1884, this was officially recognized on February 3, 1897 . Riberalta became a rubber trading center and flourished briefly. With the invention of synthetic rubber around 1900, however, production declined rapidly.

population

In 1902 Riberalta had 400 inhabitants, in 1908 there were already 2096 inhabitants and in 1911 4020 inhabitants, of which 1670 were women, 36 Germans, 17 Swiss and four Austrians.

The population of the village has increased several times over in the past three and a half decades:

Transport network

The easiest way to reach Riberalta from most Bolivian cities such as Santa Cruz de la Sierra or La Paz is by plane. Commercial flights are available from various Bolivian cities and in early 2006 the runway at Riberalta Airport was paved.

Riberalta can be reached on the highway network of Bolivia via the almost 700 kilometers long Ruta 8 , which crosses the Beni department from Yucumo and Rurrenabaque in a north-easterly direction, but is unpaved and poorly maintained.

A better road connection exists from the Brazilian Porto Velho to Riberalta, which crosses the Río Mamoré at Guajará-Mirim . From Guayaramerín on the Bolivian side, the last section of Ruta 8 runs as a toll, paved road to Riberalta with regular bus connections.

More important inner-city streets and connecting axes are paved or concreted. The most common means of transport is the motorcycle. Cars are in the minority, bicycles are used sporadically. Around 25 percent of the population owns a small motorcycle. Around 600 moto-taxis are available for public transport, and the flat rate for a trip is around four Bolivianos.

care

The city of Riberalta is supplied with electricity by an oil power station. Especially in the transition between day and night, this is sometimes overloaded, so that in some cases power outages must be expected. The tap water comes from a water tower. Alternatively, groundwater can be drawn through a draw well. Riberalta has a sewage system that delivers the sewage to a natural sewage treatment plant.

economy

The most important sources of income are the cultivation and harvest of Brazil nuts and tropical wood . In and around Riberalta bricks ( adobes ) are made from clay. As the population increases, so does the service sector. There are shops for consumer goods or banks.

Others

Riberalta is a classic drawing board city . The buildings outside the center are partly made of wood and clay, the roofs of palm branches.

About 11 kilometers from the center, in the direction of Guajará-Mirim, is the "Esmeralda Parque Ecológico" in the jungle. It is a spacious park, built by an emigrated Swiss. In this park you can swim and relax with sports and games. Very few tourists come to Riberalta because of its remote location and because there are no real sights in the city.
