Cachuela Esperanza is a town in the Beni department in the lowlands of the South American landlocked state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Cachuela Esperanza ("Rapids of Hope") is the central location of the canton of Cachuela Esperanza in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Guayaramerín in the province of Vaca Díez . The place is located at an altitude of 118  m on the right bank on the rapids of the Río Beni , 30 kilometers before it joins the Río Mamoré to the Río Madeira .

history

The settlement on the rapids of the Beni was discovered in 1846 by the Bolivian scientist José Agustín. Attracted by the rubber boom, Nicolás Suárez crossed the Andes with his six brothers in 1872 and established the center of his Bolivian rubber empire in Cachuela Esperanza , with branches in Acre , Manaus , Belém and London . He had a theater and tennis courts built here, a luxury hotel with a view of the rapids and a modern hospital. The first X-ray machine in Bolivia was located here, and the millionaires from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo were flown in by seaplane . When rubber was gradually replaced by synthetic rubber compounds in the 1920s, the importance of Cachuela Esperanza also declined , and with the Bolivian Revolution of 1952, the artificial jungle city finally sank into insignificance.

geography

Cachuela Esperanza is located in the Bolivian lowlands near the border with the Republic of Brazil . The region has a tropical, hot and humid climate all year round .

Personalities

The most outstanding personality of the place in the past was the rubber king Nicolas Suárez Callaú, next to the tin barons Patiño , Hochschild and Aramayo one of the most influential industrialists in Bolivia. In 1925, Cachulea Esperanza was the birthplace of Eugen Gomringer , son of a Swiss and a Bolivian, who is considered the father of concrete poetry .

Transport network

Cachuela Esperanza is 660 kilometers by road north of Trinidad , the capital of the Beni department.

From Cachuela Esperanza a dirt road leads in a south-easterly direction, crosses the Río Yata and after 43 kilometers through tropical forest and open bushland reaches the town of Guayaramerín on the left bank of the Río Mamoré. Guayaramerín is the end point of the 1631 kilometer long highway Ruta 9 , which begins in the south on the border with Argentina at Yacuiba and leads via Trinidad and San Ramón to Guayaramerín.

Rapids

The huge rapids at Cachuela Esperanza interrupt shipping on the Río Beni 30 kilometers above its mouth, and in the dry season tidal waves can reach heights of up to 8 meters here. An agreement between the state governments of Bolivia and Brazil in 1984 put forward plans to tame the rapids by building a hydroelectric power station and generating electricity for export to Brazil, but this project has been suspended to this day.
